On November 22, 1963, Karen Johnson was watching TV. When the news broke that President Kennedy had been shot, she ran to the basement where her mother was hanging up clothes. “She looked like she was going to faint,” says Johnson. “Then all day the phone was ringing, and some of the people were crying so hard you couldn’t tell who was calling.”
